Harry’s Bar St Croix!

November 17, 2008

I wonder if you have heard of Harry’s Bar? No, not the one in Venice, but the ones in Princeton NJ and in St Croix, at our vacation rental.

You see my husband Harry has an affinity with bars with lots of ambiance, charm and character. Maybe it’s his English heritage or maybe it’s just that he enjoys informal settings and good company.

In any case he has now created two bars. Both are very different. One is in the woods at our home in Princeton NJ and has a wood burning stove and is geared to the cold winters!

The other is in St Croix at Sugar Bay House and is situated pool side and definitely geared to warmer climes.

What both have in common though is that they are warm and welcoming and have become the “soul” of both places. In St Croix, even though there are multiple gathering spots, invariably after a hot sunny day at the beach or by the poolside, we will gather in Harry’s Bar for a pre dinner beverage. With the views and the cooling trade winds plus a frozen margarita or chilled mojito there is somehow nothing better! You can see more photos of Harry’s Bar, St Croix at www.sugarbayhouse.com.

Working In Paradise

November 11, 2008

My husband and I actually felt very mixed when we broke down and installed wireless internet service at Sugar Bay House. On the one hand we wanted/liked to escape the real world and just relax. On the other hand, because we both run are own businesses we found that we were unable to “go island” too long and as such the time we could spend in paradise was too short.

So, after much reflection, we installed broadband VI and it is wonderful. We can access the internet from anywhere in the house… yes even lying on one of our sumptuous outdoor chaise, or sitting under a palm tree by the pool, or in Harry’s Bar looking out at the gorgeous blue vistas.

We do admit to sometimes feeling guilty (although only for a brief moment) as we participate in conference calls from any one of these locations.

You can even call us in our stateside offices at our local numbers and be connected to us in St Croix.

We can shop and make future travel plans. We can do our banking. In effect, we really can now “go island” without missing a beat and yes, we still do relax knowing that we are taking care of all that we need to during the day, while still enjoying those warm tropical breezes and star filled skies come the evening!

You too could do the same as our house is a vacation rental . Check it out at www.sugarbayhouse.com

Service Above And Beyond!

November 1, 2008

Sugar Bay House has been very lucky to have had a great property manager called Peter for many years. Peter has become somewhat of an internet celebrity as word of his great service spreads.

Without Peter Sugar Bay House would not be the same! We have a great Peter story that we wanted to share with you.

In 1997 (I remember it well as it was the year our youngest son Nick was born) our good friend Karen, and I, and our two boys were staying at the house. It was a very dry period. All of a sudden a major brush fire erupted. In preparation for such an event Peter had set up hoses around the house ready to himself fight any fire that threatened our precious house.

Pete ordered Karen and I and the children to evacuate the house. He stayed to fight the fire. It was pretty scary! The fire engine arrived and once the fire was contained  and extinguished ( there was no damage to Sugar Bay House) Karen and I returned. We got the children back to sleep and then all rendezvouz’d in the heart of the house, Harry’s Bar, to calm our nerves! Pete by then had moved on from fire fighter to barman. He was in his bathing suit and was covered with soot. Valiantly tending bar he says in all earnestness “ I’m really sorry but we don’t have any frosted beer mugs tonight”. Well Karen and I just fell about laughing  to think that anybody would even think or care about having frosted beer mugs at the stage was so funny. We were just happy to have a beer! But this story typifies how Peter always goes above and beyond to make our guests  more than comfortable!

Welcome to the very first post on our new blog!

Why have this blog? Well to tell the truth, thanks to our two teenage sons, we are finally discovering all these wonderful new ways of communicating, this being one of them. Also my husband and I both love to write!

We thought it might be fun to blog about our vacation home in St Croix. We have owned this property for over 20 years. I say property as we have had two houses on this property in that time period. The first one being destroyed by Hurricane Hugo. At the time this was devastating but once we were able to rebuild  our dream home, the current Sugar Bay House, in 1994, we felt much better.

We rent our house  as we are not yet ( unfortunately! ) retired and cannot spend as much time there as we would like, but hopefully one day……!

Over the years we have had many experiences renting out our St Croix villa and thought we would use this blog to share and capture in writing some of these. So stay tuned…. some are funny, some are not so funny, but we can promise you, none are dull!

We have attached a couple of photos of our St Croix house and you can also see a lot more on our website at www.sugarbayhouse.com
